What the Red Cross does
The Red Cross, born of a desire to bring relief, without discrimination, to all those wounded on the battlefield, is founded on its international and national capacity to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for human life. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace among peoples.
It makes no distinction as to nationality, race, religion, social status or political creed. It seeks to alleviate the suffering of people by relieving their needs and by giving priority to urgent cases.
The Red Cross is independent. The National Societies, while cooperating with the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain an autonomy which will enable them to act in accordance with the principles of the Red Cross.

In 1873 with the Cantonal Rebellion its first maritime action took place, the first maritime ambulance in history appeared in Cartagena, the steamship "Buenaventura", the neutral ship that flew the Red Cross insignia, under the presidency of Don Antonio Bonmatí y Caparrós who directed the operation.
Due to the war conflicts in Africa in 1918, there was a strong expansion of its health centers, reaching a total of about 36 hospitals. In a panorama of generalized shortages in health matters, the Red Cross network had a special significance, being directed the Red Cross mission in the Rif by Carmen Angolotti, Duchess of Victory, who organized hospitals in Melilla, Larache and Tetuan.
The experience acquired in these periods was used in the intervention in the face of subsequent disasters that would take place throughout the national territory (fires, floods, accidents of all kinds, etc.).
In 1996, after the criticized management of Carmen Mestre[4] as president of the institution and the consequent social rejection of these events, the Council of Ministers approved a Royal Decree by which the appointment of the presidents of the Red Cross ceased to be a governmental competence. Subsequently, new Statutes were drawn up to reinforce the independence of the Institution and the role of the General Assembly.
